Strategic Infrastructure

Innovative thinking and technologically advanced infrastructure intertwine to promote the growth of emerging sectors in Prince Edward Island.

Examples of facilities that accommodate this infrastructure include:

BioCommons Research Park

The BioCommons Research Park will be built on 65 acres of land located on the Upton Farm Property in Charlottetown. The BioCommons is a major strategic initiative of the Island Prosperity Strategy. It will become a centre for bioscience research and development, manufacturing and support services. The heart of the BioCommons will be a state-of-the art biotechnology incubator that will assist companies in commercializing their products. The key mandate of the BioCommons is to connect our primary sectors to the modern tools of biotechnology to create new products from our primary resources.

The Summerside E-Health Centre of Excellence

The new E-Health Centre of Excellence will be located in the historic Holman Centre on Water Street in downtown Summerside and will serve to attract new companies and employment opportunities to the Island economy.

Construction is well under way and the extensive $7 million renovation project is expected to be completed in 2010.

The E-health industry is still in its infancy in Prince Edward Island; however, it's growing substantially, thanks in large part to the recent expansions at leading companies.

  • Carestream Health has developed a reputation as a global leader in medical imaging. The company currently employs approximately 70 people at its offices located at the Holman Building in downtown Summerside.
  •  MDDx is a medical device company that uses wireless monitoring technology for remote medical and data collection for the North American marketplace. This company has a goal of hiring up to 20 people.
  •  Millennium Care, an international information technology company will create 30 new jobs in Summerside. Millennium Care offers very detailed IT support for corporate customers. Employees are currently being recruited to work at the Summerside office.

The Government of Prince Edward Island will continue to investigate opportunities in the e-health sector to build on the success of the Holman Centre.
